Sockeye Fishing Then and Now

The Sockeye at the top is a coastal scene as it would look now with a modern city in the background but with the old Haida way of fishing in their sustainable fashion. The Sockeye in the foreground is the coastal scene of the way it would have looked in the past with a Haida village in the background but with our present day way of fishing going on.

Description

Sockeye Salmon: Oncorhynchus nerka

The sockeye or red salmon is considered to be the best tasting of all the West Coast salmon.  Growing to lengths of 33 inches these fish range from the Bering Sea to Los Angeles, California.  They spawn in freshwater tributaries of lakes where they spend the first one to three years.  These young fish will migrate to the ocean where they will live for another two to four years. At this time, the males turn bright green with red heads, and then return to home streams to spawn and die.
